Clothed!

Here we are on day 151 of the Proverbs 31 project!

It’s been a long while since I posted anything but that certainly doesn’t mean that the Proverbs 31 project hasn’t continued. The quest to live out the characteristics of the Proverbs 31 woman has carried on throughout a very busy summer and verse 25 has sustained me through the last few months.

“She is clothed with strength and dignity,
and she laughs without fear of the future.”

Proverbs 31:25

It’s a verse that we’ve heard many times and will have seen on mugs, t-shirts, bookmarks and phone cases. It’s one of those verses that gets thrown around at women’s conferences and makes the perfect cross-stitch. There are many verses like this, their meaning often diluted by their familiarity, but over the past month I’ve mulled over these words and spoken them repeatedly over my life.

The idea of being clothed in strength and dignity fascinated me. When we wake up in the morning, we open our wardrobes and choose what we are going to wear depending on what we will be doing during that day. What we wear often sets the tone of the day, whether it’s a smart suit for an interview or pajamas for a day sat binge-watching a box set on Netflix.

The thought struck me that it might be wise to choose my spiritual outfit for the day as well. It would be even more sensible to ask God to help me choose the appropriate outfit to help me navigate whatever He has in store for me.

clothe
  • put clothes on (oneself or someone); dress.
  • provide (someone) with clothes.
  • endow with a particular quality.

By waking up each morning and asking God to “endow” me “with a particular quality” I have found that a different spiritual tone is set for the day. I may not feel full of strength and dignity at times, but by asking God to clothe me in these qualities I have noticed that they are more readily available when required.

When you wake up tomorrow morning and choose your outfit for the day, take a minute to ask God to clothe you in whatever qualities He would like to dress you in and see if it makes a difference!

Now you’re dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it.”

Colossians 3:10
